It is a collage comprised of photos I shot of Broughton Street in Savannah, light posts, street signs, a girl wearing boots, and a skirt. I wanted to keep the gritty texture of the concrete street since the concept of the show has to do with fashions of people walking on Broughton Street. I played with the scale of the items in the collage in order to keep the paper doll pieced together appeal a collage can have.

A Hollywood Assistant Cabaret. It’s a cabaret show performed by top agent assistants with all proceeds benefitting the American Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief. He called me up and had me do a logo, poster, and promo materials for the show.

I wanted the logo to be reminiscent of west coast surf designs while still keeping the hard edges and rectangular shapes to allude to the city skyline. For imagery I opted for a classic L.A. rush hour scene which is not only a perfect representation of life in the city but also that of relationships. The show itself goes through different stages of relationships: beginnings, middles, and ends. I thought it was appropriate to show people headed in different directions at different paces, some stopped, some slowly inching, some actually getting somewhere, some getting off the highway, some getting just getting on. Every one is on an individual journey, yet still connected by the city itself.

For those of you who don’t know, I have joined a belly dance troupe called Cairo on the Coast in Savannah. Saturday will be first public performance which I had the honor of designing the poster for. I used an image taken by Nathan Jones and Colin Douglas Gray as the base for the design. Since it was shot with bright psychedelic colors I wanted the type treatment to echo that of the 1960s concert posters while respecting the middle eastern themes the actual performance has. The posters are intended to be hung around bars and downtown hotspots, so I chose the aged look to tie it all together.

It’s finally happened! This first issue of Outlet magazine is coming out December 17th, 2009. My close friend and now business partner, Laura Clark, and I put our heads together only a few months ago to bring a mere idea to fruition. Outlet is a quarterly publication for the arts community in Savannah that will feature the work of local emerging artists, host projects to bring artists together, and document the art Savannah culture. It’s too early to tell what this will turn into but for now we got enough support to put the first (printed might I add) issue out.

We will host a release party Thursday, December 17th at HangFire starting at 8:30pm. So come celebrate with us!!! Below are a few spreads from the Winter 2009 issue.

It started out as an ink drawing on vellum with a Sharpie but eventually developed into a layered digital work. The background is made up of crayon on wood that was photographed, along with crumpled paper texture and photographs of blurred fabrics.
